Consider Spiritual Growth…
We all need help to develop spiritually. Proverbs says, “He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed.” (Pro. 13:20). It also tells us that foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child. So it is unwise to leave spirituality up to the child. Therefore, as a parent, you should consider the spiritual growth of your child(ren).
Before you have a child, this should be a talking point. What do you believe about God and faith? What does your spouse believe? The spiritual nature of a marriage, (or just having a child), is a huge part of any relationship.
All of us have that spiritual being, whether we understand it or not, and whether we grow in this or not. But what a great understanding and wholeness that comes when we have a right relationship with God. As you each grow closer to the Lord, you will also grow closer to one another. This becomes a much healthier position for children to thrive.
Make this a consideration before you bring a child into the world. Talk about what you believe about faith, God and eternal life. Decide what standards and morals you want for your child. As we have already stated in other articles, be of the same mind.
It is my firm understanding that men are the spiritual leaders in the home, and we cannot abdicate this responsibility. It is also my conviction that we are accountable for what influences we allow in our child or children’s lives. This worked for us, so you can follow if you like, we had one standard – ‘If it is not good for our kids, it is not good for the parent.’ This keeps from a double standard in the home.
If my personal spiritual growth is important, it means that this is also important for our child. A husband and wife can have a deeper, fuller relationship when your beliefs are the same. I am a Christian and believe the Bible, as you see. My wife and I discussed these things while dating, so it was always settled and not a point of argumentation. My belief is that Jesus is the Messiah/Christ that gives new life because of His substitutionary death, and now all my family can have peace and joy in that relationship with our Lord. My opinion – take your kids to church.
If you have questions or comments on this, they are most welcome.
